Joy Delivered, One Bouquet at a Time

What began as a simple invitation to spread joy this Mother’s Day blossomed into a beautiful reminder of what community can accomplish together.

On May 9, volunteers of all ages gathered for “Blooms and Blessings,” a Mother’s Day service event organized by Village Collective in collaboration with DoodleBug Workshop.

Designed as a simple but meaningful opportunity to serve local mothers living in skilled nursing care, the event invited attendees to bring flowers from their own gardens or store-bought bouquets to contribute to a community flower station. Together, volunteers assembled thoughtful arrangements that would later be delivered to mothers in care facilities throughout the area.

What made the event especially meaningful was the overwhelming community participation. More than 50 attendees came together throughout the morning, creating an atmosphere filled with creativity, connection, and generosity. Families, students, neighbors, and local supporters worked side by side arranging flowers, preparing bouquets with care and intention.

By the end of the event, volunteers created and delivered more than 70 bouquets to mothers living in skilled nursing care, offering a reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting impact.

Some of those bouquets were delivered to residents at DuPage Care Center, where administrators shared their appreciation for the thoughtful gesture. 

As shared by the administration with event organizer Amy Erkenswick:

“Amy, the flowers were beautiful! The residents that are mothers were very appreciative and enjoyed receiving them! Thank you so much for thinking of the DuPage Care Center!”

The event reflected the broader mission of Village Collective, which focuses on strengthening neighborhoods by connecting families and encouraging volunteerism throughout the Wheaton community. Through gatherings like “Blooms and Blessings,” the organization aims to create opportunities for neighbors to support one another while building deeper local relationships rooted in compassion and service.

The success of the event also sparked excitement for future community outreach efforts. While plans are still being finalized, organizers are currently exploring a household needs drive or children’s clothing drive to benefit residents in transitional housing.

The next community event date has already been secured for Wednesday, July 15, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at 302 Wheaton.

This event is supported by the American Stewardship Initiative (ASI), which advances a leadership framework that encourages civic engagement and strengthens communities. ASI works to revitalize American cities through nonpartisan, solutions-driven efforts addressing today’s most pressing challenges.

Ultimately, “Blooms and Blessings” served as more than simply a flower arranging event. It is a powerful reminder of what can happen when neighbors come together to invest back into each other and Wheaton.
